What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming™?
NLP – those three letters!...
- Neuro refers to how subjective experience is received, and processed through the five-senses.
- Linguistic refers to how verbal and non-verbal language are represented, coded, and ordered to give meaning.
- Programming refers to how we can organize our experience, neurology and resources to achieve our targeted desired results.
First of all…
NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) is NOT therapy. Period! Academically speaking, it’s the “study of the structure of subjective experience and what can be calculated from it". It’s based on the premise that all behavior, whether judged as “good” or "bad" - has a structure - that can be quantified and taught to others, if need be. This structure can also be enhanced - if necessary. Stated simply... you can adopt any successful behavior so that you confidently get more of what you want from life, as long you know its structure... anything is possible...
How it all Began...
Prominent medical-doctors, social scientists, cyberneticists, athletes and linguists of their time were mentors to both Richard Bandler (mathematician and computer scientist) and John Grinder (linguistics professor), the creators of NLP. Other noted individuals included distinguished anthropologist, Gregory Bateson, world-renowned hypnotist Milton Erickson, sought-after therapists Virginia Satir and Frank Farrelly. These four individuals - especially - had a powerful impact on Bandler and Grinder during that time, thus influencing NLP’s birth and direction. Their cutting-edge technology was largely developed at the University of California, Santa Cruz, during the 1960’s and 1970’s. Bandler and Grinder were particularly interested in uncovering the thinking and behavioral strategies and patterns of successful people, regardless of the field they dominated. These two pioneering men brought their numerous models for success and other key discoveries they made under one umbrella; and this is what’s now known today as... Neuro Linguistic Programming.
NLP Today...
NLP has been applied and is still being rigorously utilized in almost, if not, all facets of life... for all kinds of reasons, starting from: the military, school teachers, (e.g The Durham Project) stockbrokers, writers, martial artists, Olympic athletes, success coaches all the way to the health profession … Even NASA has been applying NLP as part of its space program, under the guidance of Dr. Richard Bandler.
Adding to this...
The textual description above is just one level of understanding of what is NLP. Anyone wishing to get a full description and comprehension of what NLP - truly is, MUST – experience it.
